Generations of people are coming together to help end gun violence. In March 2018, a group of Stoneridge Creek residents joined the March for Our Lives movement in Livermore. It was one of the “sibling marches” planned worldwide in conjunction with the March for Our Lives event in Washington, D.C.
Thirty-five to 40 residents from Stoneridge Creek marched in support of the students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in the wake of the February 14 shooting that killed 17 and injured 17 more.
The residents carried handmade signs with slogans like “Grannies Against Guns.” Mary Becker was joined by Jori, age 11, who declared, “Lives are more important than having guns.” Becker walked with Jori with a sign declaring, “I am 101, and I stand with the kids.”
Many of the residents taking part were new to politics, but felt compelled to make their voices heard. “I’ve never done anything like this, and I’m nearly 80,” said Joy Kish.
