Water aerobics is an excellent option for seniors due to its low-impact nature. It provides a challenging workout without stressing the joints. To start, it’s recommended that you find a local class or create your own routine at a nearby pool.

Stoneridge Creek’s fitness manager, Roy Fowler, was interviewed about the subject in a recent care.com article. As a certified personal trainer with the National Academy of Sports Medicine, fowler knows the importance of highlighting the benefits of water aerobics classes for seniors.

“The best way to start is by choosing an appropriate class to fit your level,” Fowler says. He recommends reading the descriptions of the classes to get an idea of what they entail and who the class is designed for.

Fowler says most workouts done outside the water can be done in the water, too. These include bicep curls with pool noodles, leg lifts, and even running in the water. Fowler outlines other exercises, including:

1.        Walking back and forth in the water. You can also try skipping or shuffling your feet

2.        Plyometric (jumping) moves. Either jumping jacks, high knees, and butt kicks

3.        Arm fly extensions or upright rows in shallow water

Water Aerobics at Stoneridge Creek

Stoneridge Creek offers many opportunities for purposeful living and fitness activities. The Bay Area Life Plan community has two pools, including one open-air indoor pool.

Stoneridge Creek resident Shirley Kaminsky has been practicing water aerobics for 20 years. She currently utilizes the Stoneridge Creek pool three times a week.

“It’s a way to get good cardiac exercise without damaging the joints,” she told Care.com. “I enjoy the structure of classes, exercising to music, and moving to the beat. It’s very freeing to be in the water. It’s almost as if you can meditate as you’re moving.”

Other residents, like Susan “Susie” Krause, use the pool to swim laps and stay physically fit. Krause competed in the 2023 Lake Tahoe Sharkfest Swim competition and holds the record for the most experienced female swimmer. This Pleasanton senior finished the one-mile swim in open waters at 43:13.

Along with her Lake Tahoe Sharkfest Swim, Krause also completed the Oceans Seven challenge in the Stoneridge Creek pool, swimming around 150 miles, equivalent to swimming the length of seven channels.

While she enjoys the indoor and outdoor pools at Stoneridge Creek, she also participates in many fitness classes, including boot camp, strength training and barre boot camp.
